Hungry Ghost Festival

This month is Hungry Ghost Festival.  Ghost Day was on August 14, so I missed the biggest day of the festival.  To give you a better idea of what this means, let me start from the beginning.

According to the Chinese, when you die, you enter the next life with nothing.  You need people to burn things to you so that you will have things in your next life.  Funerals often consist of people burning houses, cars, clothes, money, and many other things.  Now, they don't burn actual houses or cars or money or clothes.  They buy them in paper form...specifically designed to burn to ancestors.

Then, you must continue to burn to your ancestors so that they continue to get things.  Don't forget to burn food.  This is very important to them.  If you do not satisfy your ancestors desires, they will come and give you bad luck.  Luck is a very touchy subject in Asia, especially the Chinese countries.

Those who die who do not have anyone burning for them are believed to turn into ghosts.  They are often called hungry ghosts.  They come and give bad luck to everyone because they are angry, and hungry.

During Hungry Ghost Festival, all people are to burn stuff to the hungry ghosts.  They burn lots of money, especially.  Ghost Day (which was August 14) is the main day of the festival, where there are places set up all over to burn.  The first day I arrived, I saw people burning things, but I was naive and thought that they were burning trash.  Far from it--they were burning treasures.

What do we as Christians think of this?  Well, it's simple, really.  Christ has power over life and death.  He has won the victory through dying on the cross and rising again from the grave.  We know that when you die, you go to heaven or hell.  You cannot take your earthly possessions with you.  We see that in Luke 12.

Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” But he said to him, “Man, who made me a judge or arbitrator over you?” And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.’ But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”

We know that only through belief in God do we have eternal life in heaven.  Otherwise we are damned to eternal life in hell.  Let me assure you--Hell is not pretty.  It's the absence of God.  Without God, there is nothing good, for God is Good.

As for burning to our ancestors: besides the fact that they are in heaven or hell already and cannot receive the earthly possessions, burning to ancestors is putting your faith not in God, but in your ability to provide for your ancestors in the afterlife.  That is a sin.

As for the ghosts: we know that our souls are taken to heaven or hell.  There is no in-between.  When we die, we do not stay around the earth and haunt people, and we cannot meddle with their lives.  We will be in heaven, where we wouldn't even want to come down to give people bad luck, or in hell, from where there is no escape.

So how do we reach out to them?  Ancestor worship is so engrained in the Chinese Culture that it is almost one and the same.  This proves such a difficult obstacle for Christianity.  It is hard to say that you cannot worship your ancestors when you have known all your life that if you do not worship them, they will give you bad luck.  The Chinese culture is so superstitious.  It's hard to suddenly quit worshiping them and burning things to them.  It's like telling them that 2+2 does not equal 4.  A 'truth' that they have known for their whole life is being challenged.

Please pray for the Holy Spirit to work in their hearts to come to the knowledge of and belief in Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, son of God the Father, through whom we are saved.

I'm here!

Ok.  Sorry it took me so long to let you all know, but I am in Macau!  My apartment is getting set up, though it's a slow process: pictures to come later.  I don't have wireless, but only because I don't know the password: I'll be figuring that out later.  But I snooped through the apartment and found an ethernet cord that I was able to connect to the wireless router to get internet! :) That was the accomplishment of the morning.  The apartment is furnished.  All I have to do is put away my clothes and other belongings from the States.  There are 2 English TV stations, and one of them is a movie channel.  I watched a couple very random movies yesterday, interrupted by Chinese commercials :)

I am excited to be here, eating the food and soaking up the culture.  It is very hard when I don't speak their language, but I am slowly going to find ways to work around that.  I do not know when I will begin work, or when I will begin language lessons.  I do know this, though:

a) I am going to China today :)  It's mostly to pick someone up, but it's exciting that I'll be using my China visa!

b) Orientation starts on Tuesday.  I'll have a week of orientation, and then I don't know what: but something will happen :) as in start working? Not sure.

c) My AC is broken.  It works, then it doesn't, then it works again, then it doesn't again... and so on.  So someone is coming pretty much right now to fix it.

d) I have a 3 bedroom apartment.  Right now, I am the only occupant.  In 2 weeks, I will have a roommate who will stay for 2 months.  Then, assuming the other GEO (Hannah) hasn't come yet, I will live by myself again until Hannah comes.  This is all subject to change, but it's what I know as of now :)  I will have 3 people staying with me during orientation, though!  I'm excited about that :)

e) You may notice that my posts come from the future.  That's not a mistake...but sometimes I am a day ahead of those of you in the USA :)  It is a 13 or 14 hours time difference from central time (right now 13, and after daylight savings time it will be 14).

Leavin' on a jet plane!

Me, Rebekah, and Rachel: college buddies :)
So.  I am currently in the Denver airport!  My next flight is to Hong Kong, though there's a pitstop in San Francisco.  I am super excited to do this.  I met with Sharon (my supervisor) and her children, and we're going together from here on out!

My brother Adam, me, and my best friend Dana
I was so blessed to have a couple college friends visit me on Monday.  It was so good to see them before I left!  I also was blessed to spend most of the day yesterday with friends.  It didn't go as I had planned, as I wanted to take a nap and then stay up all night to try to begin the adjustment to China time, but I think it turned out better, because I was able to spend valuable time with some friends!!!

My parents and me at the airport
Last night my mom was so wonderful and helped me pack my bags.  She stayed up until 2:30 with me packing and woke up at 4 with me to take me to the airport.  I had some other wonderful friends, Susie and Connie, meet me at the airport to pray me off!  I know that so many of you are praying for me, and I am so blessed to have God watching out for me!  What a neat feeling.  Thank you for your prayers and thoughts!

Susie, me, and Connie at the airport
To be honest, I am in pain. (physical).  I have chronic back pain due to an injury, and I am not doing too well while travelling here.  I took some pain medication, and it numbed it a little bit, but I am just not sure...I wish it would go away.  So if you could pray for the pain to go away, that would be awesome.  I am not sure how the 14 hour flight will affect my back, but we will see.  I just hope that I am able to sleep most of it away!

I am trying to think if I have any other updates or thoughts to share with you, but I think that that is all for now.

All my bags are packed and I'm ready to go!

Ok, so not ALL my bags are packed, but it goes with the song.

I am 2 days away from departure.  I'll be in Denver 48 hours from now, if I'm not mistaken. Possibly between Denver and San Francisco.

I am ready to go, though.  I had my installation/commissioning and a potluck in my honor yesterday, so I have officially been sent off, and now am an official Lay Minister.  I'm glad that my major can be incorporated into my career, because that means my 3.5 years of college were worthwhile ;) (haha even if I wouldn't be considered a lay minister, I would still consider it worthwhile!)

Right now 2 of my college friends, Rebekah and Rachel, are here.  I am so excited to spend the entire day today with them!  I don't know what we're going to do, but I am just pumped to see them! :)

My friend Amanda leaves for Taiwan TODAY! :)  She is going to be a missionary there, and I would like to ask you to say a quick prayer for her in her ministry!

I think that's all I have for you today.  But 2 days: wow!  God is surely making this happen.  Thank God for His provision all throughout the application and preparation process of this, and please ask God to give me the same provision while I am in Macau!

5 days

Today marks 5 days!  5 days from right now I will be over the Pacific Ocean on my way to Hong Kong.  Then I will catch the ferry to Macau.  I'll let you know what total travel time will be, but if you count from the time I leave my house in America to the time I reach my apartment in Macau, the total travel time will be somewhere around 27-30 hours, depending on many things.  I am very excited to be doing this, and cannot wait to land in Asia!

Today I did a lot of things.  I woke up at 9am to a conference call discussing my call papers, and then I worked on my room and then finished filling out my call papers, along with meeting with the president of my district this afternoon.  I will finish going through my room and will then pull out my half-packed suitcases to get it all packed and ready to go.  Hopefully that will all happen today.

Tomorrow (Saturday) will be my last free day to do this stuff, because Sunday is my installation and pot-luck, along with probably spending time with my best friend(s), and then Sunday night through Tuesday morning I have guests coming over--some of my best friends from Concordia.

Tuesday I guess will be free, but I leave the next day to go to Macau, so that will probably be family day, plus whoever comes over...if they do.  We'll just have to see!  But I won't have my car anymore on Tuesday, as I have sold it and it will be traveling to its new owner.

People keep asking me if I am nervous.  I'd like to say no.  I dont get scared or worked up about moving, but lately I have had a very sore stomach.  It's not upset, but it's been sore--whenever I eat, I feel I've overeaten, even if I ate just a normal amount.  So maybe I am nervous, but I am just not experiencing it mentally--just physically.  I don't know.

Well, I'll quit babbling now.  Time to tackle the remainder of my room!  Please pray for me as the transition happens WITHIN THE WEEK!! :)

lots of stuff to do

So I have lots of stuff to do!  That's a good thing, I think.  But I looked at the list that I have as my previous post, and realized...I am about half way done with that list right now.  That's INSANE!  I have a similar list posted on my white board, and it's soooo strange to watch the items disappear!

Well, I wanted to let you know that I made a new link up top...it's called Alissa's Story.  The link is different than About Alissa, because instead of just talking about who I am, it talks about how I became a missionary.  It's a long story, because I didn't just wake up one day saying, "I think I'm gonna be a missionary."  But I think that this will help answer some people's questions, and it is a good thing for me to share with you.

Well, I am off to get my new contacts, and then to get some shots.  Oh--good news.  I do NOT have Tuberculosis   Haha...They wanted to test me just to make sure, and when they did the reading, it was a little scary because my arm is still red and sensitive where they gave me the test (it actually still is 3 days after the test).  So they had to get a doctor to come in to make sure that I didn't have it.  And I don't :)  But I have a few shots to take, and it will be fun (wishful thinking).

I am having coffee (or hot chocolate, since I don't drink coffee!) this afternoon with another 'new' missionary, and we're gonna just talk about life, fundraising, and whatever else comes up :)  It's gonna be so much fun! I am excited to talk to her.

I think that's about all for today.  I always write way too much in my posts!  Oh well!
